A New Way
Recovery without rehab
Although some people undoubtedly need the strict regime of a residential rehab, in reality most people don’t and unless your cocaine habit is completely chaotic or you have other serious health or psychiatric problems, there are many advantages to addressing your cocaine problem within your normal everyday environment.
Staying clean for a few weeks within the confines of a treatment centre, in some beautiful location is one thing, but ultimately you will have to survive in the real world with all the ups and downs and stresses and strains of life.
I prefer to work with people in the real world. Recovery is not about hiding away from the world, it is about learning to respond to differently. Although it is helpful to stay away from triggers whenever possible, many triggers can't be avoided. Some of the most powerful triggers are everyday things like “cash machines” or “Thursday lunch time” or can be uncomfortable mood states - boredom loneliness frustration and anxiety. You might be able to avoid cash machines, but you can’t avoid Thursdays or say you will never be bored or frustrated again. Ultimately you will need to learn a new way of managing your response to these triggers and the real world is the only place you can really do this. I’ll coach you in how to apply the mindful techniques in real situations as they happen. I can’t stop the dealer ringing or prevent the massive row with your partner, but I can help you to deal effectively with what it brings up in you when it happens.
In many ways life becomes your teacher, if it knocks you down I’ll pick you up, and with each new mistake and every new challenge you’ll learn and grow. We’ll do this together and with patience and practice you’ll become a master of yourself and will have a real alternative to running with your addictions.
Will anyone know I am in treatment?
One of the main benefits of doing your recovery in the real world, is that no-one needs to know that you ever had a problem. There is still considerable stigma surrounding any kind of drug problem and if you” check into the Priory with stress” it can really start the tongues wagging. If it comes out that you have a coke problem it can cause also problems with employers, friends and family, the police and even your insurance company. Fear of being discovered can often prevent people from seeking treatment, sometimes with tragic consequences. Because this programme is community based, you can carry on at work as normal, you might occasionally need to leave early to “visit the dentist” but unless you tell them no one need know that you are in treatment or that you have a drug problem at all. Quite frankly its no-one else’s business
All coaching sessions are one to one, there is no embarrassing group work and unlike some rehabs who send out a press release when someone famous checks in, I will not disclose to anyone the identities of my clients without their consent. I have worked with a number of celebrities, famous musicians, well-known actors, sports personalities and others in the public eye for whom discretion is paramount, and I take your privacy just as seriously, I won’t tell you or anyone else who I work with, even if you pull my finger nails out.
My office is in a business centre in the City of London, which is handy for all of you City boys and girls and it is in easy striking distance of anywhere in London and surrounding areas. It is an ordinary office and not a clinic and its the kind of place you might visit for an ordinary business meeting. If anyone asks you can tell them that you’re doing some personal development coaching (which is true) and if you need me to confirm that for you I will.
Some people will need medical support and we may need to get medical professionals involved, but this will only be done if the situation is imminently life threatening or with your express permission.
What is recovery coaching?
Coaching is totally different to counselling, I‘m not interested in your “problems and issues” I’m not really interested in my own. I promise no digging through your past or navel gazing and I’m really not fussed about your relationship with your mother. Nor am I some smart therapist that claims to be able to cure you (if you are waiting for someone to cure you, you’ll find its a very long wait). My role is to help you regain power, not to take it away; I will support you in taking responsibility for your own recovery. I will coach you in the techniques and practices that you need to get better and to support you while you bring them into your life, but ultimately it is only you that can get you better. Coaching is a collaborative process. I’m an expert in cocaine addiction and teaching Mindfulness, but you are the expert on your life and you have strengths, skills and abilities that will be invaluable in your recovery, coaching is a way of bringing these together.
I have a very personal style of working and many of my friends are ex-clients. Yes it is my job, but I really do care too. I may not have been where you are, but I’ve been to some pretty dark places myself. I’ve lost loved ones through drink and drugs and I completely screwed things up in a big way with my own addictions I can assure you. This connects us on a deeply human level way beyond the professional relationship and that for me is an important part of the healing process. I’ve been to my rock bottom with nowhere left to run and I’ve have found a way out of the madness, and having made this discovery I know that this suffering is unnecessary and I want to guide as many of you as I can, out of this darkness too.
