Annabel’s story - My lowest moment

‘Things came to a head last year, on Christmas Eve. I'd been out partying and hadn't slept for about three days. Suddenly I realised I was in a hotel room with a bunch of strangers. I stumbled out into the street and tried to hail a cab but I wanted to die.

‘When I did get home I rang my best friend and she came straight over. She held me for four hours, just stroking my hair and told me I had to get better. Finally, she rang my parents and my brother came to get me. I was still completely wired when I got to their house, I just sat at the bottom of the stairs, rocking backwards and forwards. Everything seemed clouded with darkness and despair.

‘My dad had seen me in a similar state once before, I had speed psychosis when I was 19, but for my mum it was terrifying. My aunt died of alcoholism and I think both my parents were scared that they'd go through a similar trauma with me.'
